2008/2009 NEW YEAR'S IN VIENNA
A TRIO OF DELIGHTS:

[Neujahrskonzert]

1. Preview Performance of the 2009 NEW YEAR'S CONCERT
Conductor Daniel Barenboim

The Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert 2009 will be conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

Musikverein, Golden Concert Hall,
December 30, 2008, 11:00 AM

The worldwide popularity of the New Year's Concert is a clear indication of the deep appreciation of the orchestra for the music of Johann Strauss – an appreciation that goes back all the way to the the "King of the Waltz" himself.

The historical facts, however, tell quite a different story. Despite the fact that many future Vienna Philharmonic members began their careers in Strauss' orchestra, the "Philharmonic Concert Association", as it was called at the time, generally ignored the most charming and "Viennese" music ever written. Probably the musicians did not wish to jeopardize their new status they enjoyed upon becoming members of the Philharmonic; they did not want to associate themselves with dance and entertainment music. It should be noted, however, that at the same time, the Strauss dynasty enjoyed the highest respect among great composers of the day, such as Richard Wagner and Johannes Brahms. The Philharmonic musicians themselves, through several encounters with Johann Strauss, had the opportunity to understand the importance of this music as well as the charismatic personality of its creator, who had enraptured all of Europe.

2. IMPERIAL BALL on New Year's Eve

Hofburg Palace, Imperial Halls
December 31, 2008, 7:30 PM

Vienna, celebrated city of music and entertainment, takes pride in inviting its guests to the Imperial Ball on New Year's Eve in the Vienna Hofburg Palace. Spend the night of Viennese charm and elegance in the staterooms of the former winter residence of the Austrian Emperors, the Hofburg Palace, and dance into the New Year to delightful waltz and operetta melodies.

(At midnight, the ringing of the "Pummerin" – the bell from St. Stephan's Cathedral – can be heard and the "Imperial Couple" wishes everyone a happy and healthy new year!

3. “DIE FLEDERMAUS” on New Year's Day

Vienna State Opera
January 1, 2009, 7:00PM

Welcome the New Year with waltz music and also enjoy the most famous Operetta by Johann Strauss, “Die Fledermaus”. In contrast to serious Opera, the Operetta is a lighter form of entertainment, and taken more from everyday situations - although its realism is not to be taken too literally when a few liberties are taken to ensure a happy-ending.
