Nanse
Gum, Music Director & Conductor
"Nanse GUM is a forceful and dynamic conductor
whose love and understanding for music has made him
one of the most respected in his field." Nanse
GUM made his debut as a conductor at the age of 17 by
performing a youth orchestra. After graduating from
Seoul National University, he went to Berlin in 1974
to study under professor Hans-Martin Rabenstein at the
Hochschule der Kunste berlin. He went on to study under
Pierre Dervaux in Nice and Paris, France. In 1997, GUM
participated in the 'International Young Conductor's
Competition of the Herbert von Karajan Foundation, in
which he was chosen as one of top finalists and was
given an opportunity to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic
Orchestra and thereafter, the Berlin Radio Symphonic
Orchester and the Rundfunkorchester Hannover des NDR
(Hanover Radio Symphony Orchestra). Since returning
home in 1980, he was appointed Conductor of the Korea
Philharmonic Orchestra (currently KBS Symphony Orchestra)
and has enriched the repertoire by developing music
programs for the orchestra and featured a number of
talented soloists, domestic and foreign.
Since late 1980s, GUM has been active in organizing
music programs among musicians of European countries
and Korea, which led to his appointment in 1987 as Music
Director of the European Masters Orchestra as assembly
of many talented musicians from various renowned European
orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London
Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic and the
National Radio-France Orchestra. In 1988, the EMO performed
in Zagreb (Yugoslavia), Budapest and many cities in
Korea. During that period, he regularly appeared with
the Moscow Chamber Orchestra with which he toured Finland(1991),
Berlin(1992), and Korea(1993). GUMs list of guest conducting
engagements in North American includes Prague's Radio
Symphony Orchestra, the Sacraments Symphony Orchestra,
the Alsaska Symphony Orchestra, the Zagreb Philharmonic
Orchestra, the Leningrad Symphony Orchestra, the Leningrad
Philharmonic Orchestra and Moscow Philharmonic. From
1992 to 1999, Nanse served as Music Director of the
Suwon Symphony Orchestra in Korea and Principal Conductor
of the Deutsche Kammer Orchestra in Frankfurt, Germany.
Since 1999, GUM has been primarily engaged in the activities
of EURO-ASIAN PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA. Under his dynamic
leadership, the Orchestra has rapidly gained prominence
in the national music scene through annovative educational
programs that appeals to music lovers of all ages. GUM
is also currently serving on the music faculty of KyungHee
University, Seoul Korea.

Seoul Yego Youth Symphony Orchestra
Established in 1953, the Seoul Arts High School (Seoul
Yego) has been widely recognized as the foremost pre-professional
school for young and specially gifted musicians, dancers,
and visual artists in Korea, and has produced leading
musicians and the finest performing artists for the
last half century. The school is also renowned for its
high quality of artistic and scholastic curriculum as
well as the excellence of its faculties.
The Seoul Yego Youth Symphony Orchestra, which began
its professional activities in 1972, has established
itself as the official representative of the Seoul Arts
High School. In addition to concerts in Korea, the Orchestra
had numerous concerts throughout the world. In 1987,
the orchestra won first prize for chamber music at the
Aberdeen International Music Festival in Scotland, and
was invited back to the Festival in 1994.
In 1992, the Orchestra performed for the opening concert
at the Okayama Philharmonic Concert Hall in Japan. In
January 1997, it performed in San Jose, California,
and made their debut at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center.
The young artists have received an invitation to perform
in New York Orchestra Festival, sponsored by World Project,
to be held in the world famous Carnegie Hall in 2004.
In 2006, they gave the 50th Annual Concert at the Seoul
Arts Center in Seoul.
