VENICE: CHIESA SANTA MARIA DELLA VISITAZIONE

This distinguished Renaissance church, whose façade relates interestingly to that of the Gesuati, its larger baroque sister, on the quay overlooking the Giudecca canal, was reopened in 1995 after repairs lasting three years.

Built between 1494 and 1524 by the Gesuati (a Sienese fraternity founded in 1355 to care for the infirm) to replace their oratory of San Girolamo, the church was dedicated to the Visitation of the Virgin to her cousin, St Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist. It consists of a single nave with a flat wooden ceiling; the high altar is sited under a cupola, beyond which is the cross-vaulted choir. The architects were principally Lombards: Francesco from Mandello on Lake Como for the nave, and Francesco Lurano from Cremona (perhaps with Mauro Codussi or Tullio Lombardo participating) for the façade. After the Gesuati were suppressed in 1668, their successors, the Dominicans, built a larger church adjoining it and the Visitazione became a public library, in which capacity it continued until 1810. It reopened as a church in 1825.

VERONA: BASILICA DI SANTA ANASTASIA

The Basilica of Saint Anastasia is definitely the most important gothic style religious monument in Verona.
Construction on the church started around 1290 and lasted a century. It was supported by the Scala family, however the name of the architect is not known.
The site chosen for the construction is very near to Lords' Square, where the Scala family had their palaces; therefore Saint Anastasia presumably became the official church of their court.
The church is built in the Italian gothic style, with three crossed naves and five polygonal apses. It was admirably restored in 1878-1881.

BERGAMO: BASILICA SANTA MARIA MAGGIORE

Situated in the middle of Città Alta, in Piazza Duomo, the Basilica is considered to be the most important monument in Bergamo. It was raised in 1100 as a vow to Mary where a more ancient church was set. Outside the Basilica has maintained its origin Romanic Greek cross shape, while inside, modified in the 1500's and in the 1600's, it has been enriched by the artistic contributions of eight centuries. The presbytery, the XIV century frescos of the transept, the big Crucifix of the "Suffering Christ", the wood confessional by Fantoni and the grave of Donizetti are works of great importance.
